Did you know Anderson Street is set to close for good?
The Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA) plan to permanently close Anderson Street as part of Government's Big Build Level Crossing Removal Project.
If this goes ahead, by 2029 our main street will be replaced with an uncharacteristic concrete ‘plaza’. The road that connects our village, supports local businesses and brings people together will be gone.
WHAT WE WANT, WHAT WE DESERVE:
Pause the project.
Release all the designs.
Restart real consultation.
This isn't just about a road. It's about the future of Yarraville.
Local traders fear the loss of equitable access to Yarraville Village will ruin business, lose customers and split our Village in two. Once Anderson Street is closed – without consideration to our uniqueness and without sympathetic design, there is no going back!
We deserve answers.
The community-led LXRAY group has uncovered serious questions that still remain unanswered:
- Out of the 110 level crossing upgrades across the State, WHY is Yarraville the ONLY project to lose its main street and WHY does the proposed design have no consideration for this as a major factor?
- WHY was Yarraville's project ‘tacked-on’ to the Spotswood project instead of being considered on its own merits?
- WHY was Yarraville Station never assessed as a standalone project?
- WHY is the only ramp accommodating bikes, prams and mobility scooters etc., 160m away from Anderson Street with ONLY stairs and lift access to cross the road. Accessibility is not equitable for all. WHY would a new design disregard laws around disability access?
- WHAT is the real reason why the original underground ramp at Anderson Street is not being reinstated to modern standards as most people expect, and instead proposes the ONLY ramp to be 160m away from the desire path resulting in a heritage building & home plus loved village shops to be demolished? The home would be saved by the design our Council backs; Council also asks VIDA to preserve the heritage shops.
- WHY hasn't VIDA released every alternative design and the evidence used to reject them? If this is the best solution, WHY not show the community every option?
- After having two streets of parking removed, WHAT is the solution for car parking and surrounding traffic flow if Anderson Street is closed?

On 21 July 2026, Maribyrnong City Council unanimously called on VIDA to pause further work until more information is provided.
We are calling on Gabrielle Williams MP, Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Minister for Public and Active Transport, to:
1. PAUSE ALL WORKS.
NO further work on the Anderson Street level crossing removal until the community has seen the full design work and been properly consulted.
2. SHOW US EVERYTHING.
Release all design options, every study, every assumption and every reason alternative solutions were rejected.
3. LISTEN BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
Conduct genuine consultation with residents, traders and Maribyrnong City Council before contracts are signed and before anything is demolished.
This is our Village.
Once Anderson Street is closed, the decision cannot be undone.
If the Government believes this is the right outcome, it should have nothing to hide.
Release the plans. Answer the questions. Listen to the community.
