Stop restrictive school Google authentication policies
Stop restrictive school Google authentication policies
The Issue
Our services’ “Chrome Sign-In” and 3rd party access policies are causing most schools to block Google Authentication and all other Google services of us. In other words, we can no longer access Google Classroom, Gmail, Google Chat or Google Calendar etc. We will not be able to access our resources as part of our education anymore.
These policies affect us students on a very personal level. As our privacy is invaded, we may get into trouble without reason and the tyrannical investigations of schools have led to permanent suspension and other injustices. My friend got suspended for researching resources for an assignment. The punishments meted out are too harsh. Many statistics indicate that today’s students are more dependent than ever on digital learning tools. A 2021 study carried out by Common Sense Media states that more than 70 percent students use online sources very often.
Over-protection during authentication becomes a stressor and learns that they are worth paying less at the end consequence. We get the need for cyber safety and school rules. But, what about the other side? Shouldn’t there be some form of flexibility that addresses the students’ rights while safeguarding their safety? The institution must come up with a plan that ensures data protection without hindering report writing. In this manner, everyone will prosper as well. To obtain a better plan, they can consult the students and technology experts.
Religiously, most online Bibles, Qurans, and other religious texts have been blocked to force students to focus on studying, not paying attention to religious events at all.
Do not take our mouths away- we did not make these rules. The covid-19 pandemic prompted a lot of changes in our life and education. People in the community were adhering to the protocols for face masks, sanitation and social distancing.
We ask for a Act or Message to be signed to prevent schools from denying us usage of essential tools, and selling our information to companies.
