Set to take effect on October 31, 2024, this legislation is not merely a policy change; it fundamentally undermines our human rights. It represents a clear violation of Article 9 of the Human Rights Act 1998, which guarantees freedom of thought, religion, and conscience. Furthermore, it infringes on Article 10's right to freedom of expression and Article 14's principle of non-discrimination. This law poses a serious threat to the ability of religious groups to express their beliefs.

While we acknowledge the complexities surrounding the abortion debate, we assert that restricting areas for peaceful protests and expressions of faith around clinics is a blatant violation of our rights to free speech and religious expression. Although the intention behind this law may be to safeguard individuals from harassment, it neglects those who sincerely wish to offer support or information. It also punishes individuals with differing views who are not protesting but are simply praying for those involved in the conversation. The case of Adam Smith-Connor, a physiotherapist convicted for praying outside an abortion centre for breaching a so-called safe zone, exemplifies this troubling trend.

In defence of our liberties, we urge government officials to reject the proposed buffer zone law. This legislation should not take precedence over our fundamental rights, particularly when it does not impede others' choices.
