Stop Relocation of Bald Eagles from Heritage Tree

Stop Relocation of Bald Eagles from Heritage Tree
The Issue
The Bald Eagles have been an integral part of our community for many years, residing in a majestic White Pine tree in Callander since 2019. Each spring, these magnificent birds can be seen adding twigs to their nest, preparing for the arrival of their eggs and the eventual emergence of their chicks. This natural spectacle draws both locals and tourists, who delight in observing and photographing the development of the eaglets throughout the spring and summer until they fledge. It’s not just a nesting site; it’s a symbol of our local heritage and a connection to the natural world.
The Municipality of Callander’s recent plans to relocate the Bald Eagles to an artificial nesting site and cut down this cherished White Pine tree is deeply concerning. This tree is not just another pine; it should be recognized as a Heritage Tree with a plaque to identify it as such. It is a living monument to the forests that thrived here before settlement reshaped our landscape. Destroying it would erase an irreplaceable part of Callander’s natural history and disrupt the lives of the eagles who have claimed it as their home.
Instead of relocating these eagles, we should be advocating for the preservation of their natural habitat. This includes seeking heritage designation for the White Pine tree, which symbolizes the resilience and beauty of our ecological heritage. Protecting this habitat not only safeguards the Bald Eagles and their future, but also maintains a vital tourist attraction that benefits our community’s economy and cultural identity.
Bald Eagles are not just birds; they are a majestic presence that enriches our environment and enriches our community’s spirit. Bald eagle populations across North America are recovering after a significant decline that led to their classification as a species at risk in Canada and the USA for many years. Their recovery is helped by Callander’s two birds’ excellent parenting skills, resulting in exceptionally high reproductive rates. This pair has produced 2-3 eaglets annually, compared to a provincial average of 0.5 eaglets per pair annually. These fledglings do not return to their parents’ territory but instead migrate to distant habitats, where they help repopulate new areas. Disturbing this pair and their nest will negatively impact the recovery of this species. To try to relocate them and destroy their home is to lose a piece of what makes Callander special, as there is no guarantee that these birds will use a nesting platform.
We urge the Municipality of Callander to reconsider this decision and take action to protect and preserve the Heritage White Pine and the Bald Eagles who reside there.
Together, we can ensure that future generations experience the joy and wonder that these eagles bring to our community. Please sign this petition to help us protect this vital part of Callander’s natural and cultural heritage.
