Stop reducing the eco-sensitive zone of Kaziranga National Park

Growing up near Kaziranga National Park, I was always captivated by its natural beauty and the incredible wildlife that roams freely within its borders, including the majestic Indian one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants, and tigers. Kaziranga has always been more than just a national park to me; it's a symbol of India's rich biodiversity and a testament to the harmony between humans and nature.
Recently, the decision to reduce the eco-sensitive zone around Kaziranga from 10 kilometers to just 1 kilometer has caused immense concern for me and many others who understand the park's ecological significance. This decision threatens the delicate balance that protects various endangered species and conserves vital ecosystems integral to the park's functioning.
Kaziranga's eco-friendly zone acts as a buffer that minimizes human interference and helps maintain ecological stability. Shrinking this zone will invariably lead to increased human activity, such as infrastructure development, which poses severe threats to wildlife corridors, disrupts animal migration patterns, and could potentially lead to the escalated poaching of endangered species.
According to data from the Assam Forest Department, Kaziranga hosts more than 2000 one-horned rhinoceroses as of the last census, playing a critical role in global conservation efforts for this endangered species. The reduction of the eco-sensitive zone endangers the natural habitat of not just these rhinos but also numerous other species that rely on this protected area.
We must urge the Forest Department of Assam and relevant governmental bodies to reverse their decision. Instead, we should be looking at ways to strengthen the park’s protective buffer zone, ensuring minimal human intrusion and prioritizing the creation of sustainable development plans that harmonize with the area's ecological needs.
