Stop Racial Disparities in Criminal Sentencing

The Issue

Racial disparities in sentencing impacts the minority communities across this nation particularly Black and Hispanic individuals who are disproportionately sentenced to harsher penalties compared to their white counterparts. Black males receive sentences that are 13.4% longer than White males, and Hispanic males receive sentences that are 11.2% longer. Moreover, more than two-thirds of people serving life sentences are people of color. This not only affects these people's lives, but their families as well as they are unfairly targeted for longer sentencing. The stakes are high as these disparities create cycles of inequality and mass distrust for the justice system throughout this nation. If change is to occur it would mean fair sentencing practices and more equitable treatment under the law and a justice system that better reflects the principles of equality and fairness on which this country was built on. Now is the time to act as ongoing awareness, combined with a growing movement for social justice presents a unique opportunity to drive meaningful reform and create lasting change in this criminal justice system. The change that this petition seeks is legislative change to promote racial equality in the eyes of justice and make sure no matter one's race, everyone is treated equally under the same law. We hope that the U.S government understands that people of this nation, particularly the minorities of this nation, are tired of the discriminate that they feel when entering the U.S criminal justice system. We hope that they will step up and enact change that is deserved of those people.
