The Issue

For anyone who's ever shopped at Five Below, you might have felt that slight hesitation at the checkout line when being asked for your email address. What seems like a simple request can often feel invasive or unnecessary, especially when all we want is a seamless, quick transaction. This is personal for many of us who have stood behind the counter and witnessed firsthand the unease it may cause.

Five Below has an internal policy that requires store associates like myself to persistently gather customer email information. While the goal might be to enhance marketing efforts, it frequently leads to an awkward exchange between the cashier and the customer. For the shoppers, it feels like being pushed into a corner; for us employees, it creates an uncomfortable work environment where customer satisfaction is not genuinely prioritized.

Many customers share concerns about their emails potentially being used for third-party marketing. This isn't just speculation. A significant number of shoppers believe that providing their email leads to increased spam or unwanted promotional content from sources other than Five Below. While it’s important for businesses to keep in touch with their customer base, trust is eroded when there is a fear of data misuse.

Moreover, pushing associates to hit specific targets for email collection adds undue pressure in an already demanding retail environment. These arbitrary collection goals can overshadow what should be the main objective: providing excellent customer service. Let’s focus on fostering genuine interaction rather than transactional mechanics.

Therefore, I request that Five Below corporate leadership reassess this policy. Consider the impact it has on both our valued customers and dedicated employees. There are alternative ways to engage with customers without making them feel coerced or compromised. Perhaps introducing opt-in methods through digital platforms where customers can sign up voluntarily might be a better solution.

By signing this petition, you can help change the way Five Below interacts with its customer base. Let's advocate for transparency and integrity in customer relations while promoting a better working environment for employees. Your support is crucial in urging Five Below to make these necessary changes.
