Stop proposed closure of Selma Olinder Elementary School

Stop proposed closure of Selma Olinder Elementary School
The Issue
Selma Olinder Elementary School has been a cornerstone of the Downtown Eastside community in San Jose for over two decades, primarily serving Hispanic and Latino families. With its diverse and dedicated student body, this school has consistently maintained stable enrollment numbers, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for our children to learn and grow. Its proposed closure threatens not only the educational welfare of many students but also risks dismantling a vibrant community pillar.
The San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) has suggested closing Selma Olinder Elementary due to alleged financial constraints. However, the impact of such a decision would be disproportionately carried by the families and children who call this school their second home. These are hardworking families who depend on the accessibility and unique cultural environment that Selma Olinder provides. Closing the school would force many families to seek alternative education far from their homes, disrupting the students’ education and burdening their daily lives.
Notably, the school’s thriving programs and dedicated staff have cultivated a rich community spirit and a haven of scholastic excellence for children who might otherwise lack such opportunities. Furthermore, the school’s role in instilling cultural pride and community values cannot be understated. The bonds formed here between educators, students, and parents represent the very fabric of our neighborhood.
While we understand the need for fiscal responsibility within the district, it is crucial to explore alternative solutions that do not compromise the educational stability of our community. Reducing administrative costs, seeking alternative funding sources, or implementing district-wide cost-saving measures could be explored to alleviate the budgetary constraints without resorting to closure.
We urge the San Jose Unified School District to reconsider the decision to close Selma Olinder Elementary School and to work collaboratively with parents, educators, and community leaders to find a viable solution that prioritizes the educational needs and well-being of our children. Let us keep Selma Olinder open and thriving, ensuring that it continues to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for future generations.
