Help Stop Proposed 36 Home Plat on Tumwater Hill & Request Tumwater Parks To Purchase Land

The Issue

Dear Neighbors,

I am writing to you today to urge you to please sign this petition to have the City of Tumwater purchase the last large parcel of woods in our area and turn it into a park. As you may already know, the developer is planning to tear down the trees and put in 36 homes. This would be a devastating loss for us and for our community. (See linked 213 page document below that explains the proposal currently being considered)

There are many reasons why we should preserve the woods and turn them into a park. First and foremost, the woods are a valuable natural resource. They provide a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, mammals, and insects. They also serve as a natural filter for our air and water, helping to keep our environment clean and healthy.

Furthermore, the woods are a beautiful and peaceful place where we can go to escape the noise and stress of modern life. They provide a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of our daily routine, and they offer a place where we can connect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Finally, turning the woods into a park would be a wise investment for our community. Parks are known to increase property values and attract businesses and tourists. They also provide a safe and healthy place for our children to play and explore.

In conclusion, I urge you to sign the petition to have the city purchase the last large parcel of woods in our area and turn it into a park. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to preserve a valuable natural resource, enhance our quality of life, and invest in our community's future before there is nothing left to preserve. The city of Tumwater has added countless new housing projects in the last several years on Tumwater Hill, but there have been no new parks added in our area to accommodate all the new residents and help balance out our communities. The city of Olympia residents have successfully fought against recent housing developments and the city of Olympia agreed to purchase those parcels for city parks instead. But they had to get thousands of signatures on a petition. So please help!

Thank you for your time and consideration. And please sign and share this as many places as possible.

Being mostly deciduous , the forested nearly 11 acres looks different all year round as the seasons change and the leaves and undergrowth come and go. We have lived here for more than 10 years with this as our backyard, our son and many kids in the neighborhood have grown up playing here and enjoying it like the park we hope it will one day become. There is no other space like this in the area that is safe for the kids to play, bike and also enjoy nature. Tumwater Hill Park is all trails on steep slopes with switchbacks and stairs so you can't ride a bike in that park.

The north part of this land has some gentle slopes, but kids ride bikes in here without the risk of any traffic. This land could be so much better for the community and property values if the city purchased it for a park and left it raw for the community to maintain. When I voted for funding for the Parks Dept, this is what I hoped some of that funding would be applied towards.

Please sign the petition, and just as importantly, please share this and encourage others to help us get more signatures to get the attention of the City of Tumwater.

Sincerely,
