Stop property taxes in the state of Tennessee
The Issue
A few years ago, I faced an overwhelming challenge. Our family home, which had been in our possession for generations, was suddenly at risk of being taken away due to an inability to pay the skyrocketing property taxes. All our fond memories, roots, and a piece of our family's heritage were threatened simply because the burden of property taxes had become insurmountable. This isn't just our story—it echoes the struggles of countless individuals across Tennessee who are on the brink of losing their homes.
Property taxes have grown exponentially over the years, making it difficult for many middle-class and low-income families to keep up. According to the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury, property taxes directly impact family budgets and are a significant strain on the average household. This issue is further exacerbated for the elderly and those on fixed incomes who find it nearly impossible to manage the continual increase in these mandatory taxes.
Tennessee has historically prided itself on being a state that stands for the common man, a haven where families can secure their futures and a place where people come to live their American dream. Yet, the current property tax system is at odds with these core values, penalizing individuals simply for owning a home.
I propose a comprehensive review and restructuring of the current property tax system. We need policies that empower our residents, such as implementing property tax caps or offering tax reliefs or exemptions for vulnerable groups like seniors, veterans, and low-income families, ensuring that owning a home remains a feasible goal rather than a source of anxiety.
Join me in urging our state legislators to initiate critical changes in Tennessee’s property tax laws. Let's come together to protect our homes, our memories, and our futures. By signing this petition, you help raise our collective voice to demand a system that is fair, reasonable, and just for all Tennesseans. Your support can make a lasting difference.
