Stop promoting AI generated media at Huntington High School
The Issue
As a concerned student, I am deeply troubled by our school's increasing reliance on AI generated media for posters, presentations, and other visual content. Instead of nurturing unique student creativity, they are overshadowing it with digital shortcuts that detract from authentic expression.
Also, there is a significant environmental factors associated with the use of AI. According to studies, the energy consumption involved in training and using AI is substantial, contributing to carbon emissions that harm our planet.
Our school has banned AI for students, recognizing the importance of developing genuine skills and curiosity. It feels hypocritical and unfair that, while students are restricted, the school itself turns to AI, creating a double standard goes against the trust between students and administrators. Schools should empower student artists and designers by encouraging the use of available resources that allow for creativity, such as Canva templates, which allow for easy posters to be created without generative AI.
Also, AI generated graphics often lack the personal touch and insights that man made designs have. They can be perceived as impersonal and lack the feeling that a student artist, or even Canva, can put into their work. I urge the school administration to reconsider its approach to media and visual content. By doing so, they can start commitment to sustainability, artistic integrity, and educational fairness.
Sign this petition today to support a positive change in our school’s practices, advocating for a future where non-AI generated material can be used to promote our school’s events!
On another note, the school has 5 Public Relations Coordinators throughout all grade levels student governments and GO which should be happy to create posters promoting school events as that is the job they signed up for and were elected to!
