The Issue

Project Sail is a proposed 13-building data center campus in western Coweta County that would occupy 832 acres near Welcome Sargent Road and Wagers Mill Road. Each computer storage warehouse is expected to span 378,000 square feet, meaning the entire project’s footprint would encompass more than 4.9 million square feet — more than twice the floor space of the Mall of Georgia.

The proposed Project Sail in Coweta County represents a significant transformation to the local environment, with potential repercussions yet to be fully evaluated. Many residents and local businesses voice rightful concerns about the nature of its impact.

Project Sail is poised to alter the local landscape, potentially disturb indigenous ecosystems, and usually, such projects give rise to issues ranging from increased noise and air pollution, to disturbing the local tranquility and decreasing residential property values. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, construction projects can contribute to increased particle pollution in the air, which can lead to health issues for residents (source: EPA reports). Furthermore, unless effectively managed, the risk of local water sources contamination due to construction waste is also high.

Building data centers in rural areas poses significant environmental risks, primarily due to their high energy consumption, large water usage for cooling, potential strain on local power grids, noise pollution, and the potential disruption of natural landscapes when large facilities are constructed on previously undeveloped land, especially if they require additional infrastructure like new roads and power lines to support their operations; this can be particularly impactful in areas with limited water resources or sensitive ecosystems

We, the residents of Coweta County, highly value our environment, health, and peace. We believe in thoughtful progress that respects our surroundings and enhances our county without sacrificing what we hold dear. Therefore, we respectfully request that the rezoning request be denied. This conversation should involve all stakeholders: elected officials, the local community, environmental scientists, and developers to ensure a balanced, sustainable path forward. Please sign the petition and join us in asking for the rezoning request to be denied on the construction of Project Sail.
