Coca-cola Stop production of PET plastic bottles, they pollute our oceans
The Issue
The ocean, the source of life to over 4 billion people, yet threatened by one of the greatest global threats, marine pollution. 100 million marine creatures die from plastic pollution yearly due to our non sustainable production and consumption patterns.
We are all responsible as 80% of ocean plastics come from land sources. These plastics are broken down into micro plastics and are mistaken for food by ocean creatures. Sea creatures end up dying from obstruction or asphyxiation.
Micro plastics also make it to our food chain as some traces have been found in seafood. We need to act now as the ever rising trend of plastic pollution threatens our oceans.
Coca-Cola, with more than 500 brands, sells more than 100 billion plastic bottles every year. This equates to 200,000 bottles a minute. Of these, an unrecoverable large part ends up in the environment, and definitely in places where waste is not collected and processed. For four consecutive years, Coca-cola was declared the world’s biggest polluter, bigger than PepsiCo and Unilever put together. Though the drinks giant made known its intention to sell at least 25% of its brands in refillable and returnable glass or plastic bottles by 2030, we shouldn't wait that long for change to occur. By 2050, we will have more plastic in the ocean than fish.
We need to switch to sustainable production and consumption patterns. The ASENIX initiative calls on Coca-cola and all the big companies to act right. Please help sign this petition.
