The Issue

In recent years, the mandis of Chandigarh have become inundated with plastic waste, posing serious environmental threats and health hazards to the community. Despite existing regulations, enforcement has been lax, allowing plastic pollution to persist unchecked. This is a significant problem as plastic waste not only clogs our drainage systems, exacerbates flooding during monsoon seasons, but also contributes to the death of local livestock and marine life who ingest these non-biodegradable materials.

Plastic pollution also affects the health of market-goers and shop owners in the mandis. Studies show that microplastics can enter the human body through food and air, causing potential respiratory issues and other health problems. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India generates roughly 3.3 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, with a significant portion of it coming from single-use plastics commonly found in markets and shopping complexes.

A sustainable and practical solution would be to set up kiosks for cloth bags within the mandis, providing an eco-friendly alternative for shoppers and vendors alike. Providing incentives for using cloth bags and imposing stricter penalties on those distributing plastic bags can ensure a shift towards sustainable shopping practices. Several Indian cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, have implemented similar strategies with significant success, demonstrating that it can be done effectively with the right commitment and policies.

We urge the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and local authorities to take immediate action. By conducting regular inspections, enforcing existing plastic ban laws, and supporting the establishment of cloth bag kiosks, we can significantly reduce plastic waste in our beautiful city. Let us set an example for other regions and protect our environment for future generations.
