According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India generates roughly 3.3 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, with a significant portion of it coming from single-use plastics commonly found in markets and shopping complexes.

A sustainable and practical solution would be to set up kiosks for cloth bags within the mandis, providing an eco-friendly alternative for shoppers and vendors alike. Providing incentives for using cloth bags and imposing stricter penalties on those distributing plastic bags can ensure a shift towards sustainable shopping practices. Several Indian cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, have implemented similar strategies with significant success, demonstrating that it can be done effectively with the right commitment and policies.

We urge the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and local authorities to take immediate action. By conducting regular inspections, enforcing existing plastic ban laws, and supporting the establishment of cloth bag kiosks, we can significantly reduce plastic waste in our beautiful city.
