The Issue

The picturesque landscape north and south of Lumb Lane in Ashton-under-Lyne is under threat from potential development plans. Recent reports and images suggest that utility surveys were conducted on the site on May 19th, sparking concerns about impending construction activities. Historically, these lands have been featured in strategic planning documents, leading residents to fear a loss of one of the community's treasured green spaces.

Green spaces are vital to maintaining our community’s health and well-being. They provide essential habitats for local wildlife, including the horses that graze these fields, and play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity. Moreover, they offer recreational opportunities and breathing space for residents, fostering a sense of community and well-being.

The potential development poses a significant threat in a town already struggling with insufficient infrastructure. The addition of more houses (rumoured to be 640) would put pressure on already stretched public services, local schools, and transport links. The community is not equipped to handle such rapid expansion, and the quality of life for the current residents could significantly deteriorate.

We urge the local council to rethink their plans and prioritize the preservation of Lumb Lane’s green spaces. Instead of constructing new houses, there should be a focus on sustaining and improving the existing infrastructure to support the community’s current needs. Planning should consider sustainable development practices that protect our environment for future generations.

Please join us in opposing this development and in advocating for the protection of our valuable green spaces. Sign this petition to send a strong message to decision-makers: we demand the preservation of Lumb Lane's landscapes and a commitment to responsible and sustainable community development.
