🚨 URGENT: Stand Against Pinhill  Cemetery’s Cruel Bylaw 🚨Update :

Pinhill Cemetery is removing all personal items from gravesites, including crosses and beloved keepsakes, even for graves that don’t yet have tombstones. This disgusting and heartless policy is deeply disrespectful and is making grieving families’ pain much worse, causing stress and anxiety during an already difficult time. I’ve attached photo's

Pine Hill Cemetery has always been a sacred space for me and many others in Scarborough, ON. Every year, my family and I celebrate Christmas with my deceased father by laying a Christmas blanket on his burial site. This has always been our way of keeping his memory alive and of showing our undying love and respect. Monthly, we visit his resting place, spending hours creating beautiful flower arrangements to honor his memory. It's more than just a visit; it's a heartfelt connection, a tradition that provides comfort and healing.

Recently, we have been informed that a new bylaw at Pine Hill Cemetery seeks to remove all decorations from the burial sites. This prohibition is a direct infringement on our family traditions, as well as those of many others who find solace and meaning in similar acts of remembrance. Not only has the cemetery prohibited our Christmas blanket, but they have also threatened to discard our lovingly crafted flower arrangements and the cherished memory box purchased by my mother, which we fill with keepsakes, holiday cards, and tokens of our love throughout the year.

My mother has not been able to fully move on from my father’s passing, and visiting him daily at Pine Hill Cemetery has become a sacred ritual that helps her stay connected to his memory. For me and my two sisters, visiting almost every other day brings comfort and keeps his presence alive in our hearts. For us, decorating his resting place is a way to express the deepest love we still hold for him. To have this right taken from us would be devastating. Being unable to celebrate meaningful days like Christmas, Father’s Day, his birthday, and other special occasions at his grave would make us feel as though we are abandoning our father and forgetting his legacy. It would strip away the connection that gives us peace, comfort, and a sense of closeness to him.

This bylaw doesn't just affect us; it affects every family who honors their loved ones in personal and unique ways. Pine Hill Cemetery is meant to be a sanctuary, a place where memories are cherished and allowed to flourish, not a place where rigid rules strip away the love and personal expressions of families like mine.

We urge the management of Pine Hill Cemetery to reconsider this bylaw. Acknowledge the deep emotional and cultural significance of these decorations and the healing they provide to countless families. Revoking this bylaw will not only honor the dead but also respect the living who maintain these sacred traditions.

Join us in voicing our opposition to this bylaw. Sign this petition to support us in keeping Pine Hill Cemetery a place of personal remembrance and enduring love. Together, we can ensure that our cherished traditions live on, allowing future generations to continue celebrating and honoring their loved ones in meaningful ways.
