Domestic rabbits are mistreated and abused every single day, one of the most common ways that happens is putting them in small wooden enclosures called, hutches. Unfortunately we live in a world where putting domestic rabbits in hutches is the norm. But in reality rabbits need so much more than that. These “Rabbit safe enclosures” are small and unsanitary. These enclosures have a “roof” that keeps all the smells of the litter contained in the hutch, rabbits can actually be prone to ammonia quite easily in those circumstances. Most hutches are kept outside which is incredibly dangerous for a number of reasons. Predators, rabbits are prey animals that do not eat any other animal, therefore at the bottom of the food chain, birds, bears, dogs, cats, cougars, coyotes etc. Are all very dangerous to rabbits.The risks of attack from these animals are heightened when they are put outside. Indoor hutches are also a problem. Indoor hutches don’t necessarily impose the risk of predators, unless you have other house pets that are not bonded to the rabbit. But ammonia and lack of space and enrichment are very big problems. Rabbits need space to exercise and roam freely, hutches take away that very important aspect of there lives. Average lifespan of a rabbit that lives on a hutch is 3-6 years. Average lifespan of an indoor non hutch rabbit is 8-14 years.
