Stop pet shops from selling rabbits and using breeders

Stop pet shops from selling rabbits and using breeders
The Issue
My dear rabbit, Rex, was a victim of the irresponsible practices of pet shops. When I rescued him, he was suffering from various health issues that no pet should have to endure. Rex has experienced numerous episodes of Gastrointestinal Stasis (GI stasis) since he was just 3 months old, a condition I came to know was linked to a chronic infection that he was born with — Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Shockingly, he was sold to me without any prior health checks or vet consultations from the pet shop.
Rex's story is sadly not unique. Many rabbits are sold by pet shops after being bred in environments that do not prioritize their health and wellbeing. According to the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund, over 75% of rabbits purchased from pet shops suffer from undiagnosed health conditions. Breeders that supply these shops often operate with the sole focus on profit, neglecting the need for proper medical care and hygienic living conditions for these innocent animals.
The sale of rabbits from these sources contributes to a cycle of neglect and suffering. It is time for pet shops to source responsibly or cease the sale of rabbits altogether. We can instead promote the adoption of rabbits from shelters, where these animals are provided with necessary medical care and a fair chance at life. The House Rabbit Society estimates that there are thousands of rabbits in shelters, desperately in need of loving homes.
We implore lawmakers to implement stricter regulations on the sale of rabbits in pet shops. Mandatory health checks and vet visits should be enforced to certify the wellbeing of these animals before they are ever placed for sale. We also encourage the public to consider adoption from shelters, reducing the demand for breeder-supplied rabbits.
Join us in demanding better conditions for these gentle creatures who deserve love, care, and their rightful place in a healthy home. Sign this petition to urge legislative change and create a world where no rabbit has to suffer needlessly, following Rex's unfortunate path.
