The Issue

PROTECT OUR HIGH STREET

Nottingham City Council’s proposed Traffic Regulation Order 2025 (TMP 7454) proposes to introduce resident-only parking zones and additional parking restrictions across Sherwood.

62% of UK drivers report that the cost or lack of availability of parking puts them off visiting local shops.

This scheme will reduce already limited parking, harm local businesses, and further restrict access for residents, visitors, shoppers, and workers.

Our reasons for opposing the scheme:

  1. Sherwood already suffers from inadequate parking.
Implementing more restrictions will make daily life harder for residents and discourage visitors.
Local shops, cafés, and businesses will suffer.
  2. Sherwood High Street relies on accessible parking to attract customers. Without it, businesses risk losing trade and the area could decline.
  3. Previous parking was already removed.
The Spondon Street car park was sold for a library and housing development, reducing available parking. The library isn’t even open yet — and the council has provided no replacement spaces.
  4. The scheme feels like revenue raising rather than community support.
Many residents feel the council’s decisions prioritise income from permits over the wellbeing and practicality of the community.
  5. No credible parking alternatives have been provided.   A parking permit scheme should only be introduced alongside proper supporting infrastructure — which is not the case here.

We call on Nottingham City Council to withdraw TMP 7454, consult properly with Sherwood residents and business owners, and develop a fair solution that genuinely supports the community rather than punishing it.
