Stop period poverty by having a yearly charity drive to raise money for sanitary products!
The Issue
This is an important issue not just to myself, but to the 75,000 women who are currently struggling without basic necessities of life. I am writing to you today to bring attention to the fact that over 10% of women in The UK have no access to period products and sanitary items, and that 15% of people in The UK struggle to access toiletries as well.
People having no access to period products bring up other difficulties as well. A study conducted in France shows that 49% of women struggling with period poverty also experienced other psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression. As well as this, women's physical health can be affected. Not using sanitary products or keeping them in for a prolonged amount of time can cause UTIs and bacterial infections.
One change which promises to address this issue would be to host a yearly charity event to raise money for homeless people to buy the toiletries they need and deserve to have. This would be hosted in the winter, since not many events happen around this time, and people living outside would be more vulnerable to falling ill around this time as well. This could be open to the public to donate, and all Ruislip High School students. This event would be similar to Raising and Giving week, but instead would be hosted by KS3 and KS4 students. One idea for this event would be having a bake sale, and a raffle draw. Other ideas could be penalty shootouts or an own clothes day.
While I understand that there are many other issues to address, such as world hunger, and poverty in general, I believe that this is the first step, and a crucial one. In fact, 100% of the people I asked in a survey said that they think having access to toiletries and sanitary products should be a basic human right.
Ultimately, the issue of homeless people not having access to sanitary products and toiletries is up to the government, but as the people, we can help. By having a charity drive every year to raise money for this issue, I have no doubt that it would help out a lot of people, and start the change we want in society.
