Stop Penalising Parents of Children with Special Needs for School Non-Attendance

The Issue

As a parent of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other conditions, I have experienced firsthand the struggle of balancing my daughter's educational needs and her emotional and physical well-being. There are times when due to her disabilities, she is unable to attend school. Yet, instead of understanding and support, I am being taken to court and threatened with a fine up to £2500.

This is not an isolated case. Many parents across the country face similar situations daily. The current laws focus on neurotypical children without considering the unique challenges faced by children with additional needs such as ADD, ADHD, developmental delay etc.

These laws fail to recognize that these children may refuse or are unable to attend school due to difficulties surrounding their disabilities. It's not about truancy; it's about inclusion and fairness in our education system for all children regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

We need legislation that acknowledges these realities rather than punishing parents who are doing their best for their child’s welfare under challenging circumstances. We need policies that promote inclusivity rather than exclusion based on disability.

It's time we stop penalizing parents for prioritising the health and well-being of their special needs children over compulsory attendance at school. Let us unite in urging lawmakers to amend these unfair practices against families dealing with special needs education.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all students including those with special needs - because every child deserves an inclusive education system that understands them.
