This is our second petition to save Chartres Cathedral from repainting. We are very grateful for the delay in restoration of the transepts until 2019, as reported by NY times in September 2017, and are petitioning to ensure that it never starts again.

For historic monuments, cleaning and structural maintenance is ok, repainting is NOT! We demand a stop to the painting and plastering of the interior of Chartres Cathedral. Restoration is currently ON HOLD until summer 2019 - the north and south transepts holding two rose windows must be protected!

An ongoing restoration began in 2009 with the intention of restoring the “original” appearance of Chartres Cathedral violates articles 3 and 6 of the 1964 Venice Charter, stating that "No new construction, demolition or modification which would alter the relations of mass and colour must be allowed".
