Ongar is a small historic market town cherished by its residents for its rich history, unique character, and the tranquility offered by its surrounding countryside. The proposed housing development by Bloor Homes on Chelmsford Road threatens to alter the fabric of our beloved town irrevocably. As a community that takes pride in our history and green spaces, we are deeply concerned about the impact this could have on the town's environment, infrastructure, and quality of life.

The Local Plan has already scheduled approximately 531 new homes to be developed in Ongar, a significant number that will demand careful integration to preserve the town's character. However, the additional proposal by Bloor Homes dramatically escalates this burden, straining local resources and infrastructure, which are not equipped to handle such rapid expansion. Our roads, schools, healthcare services, and other essential infrastructures are already under pressure.

Moreover, the environmental impact of this overdevelopment cannot be understated. Increasing housing density without thoughtful green space integration will have long-lasting repercussions on local wildlife and biodiversity. Ongar’s greenbelt and open fields are not just scenic amenities; they are essential to the ecological health of the entire area.

We urge the local council and planning authorities to reconsider the Bloor Homes proposal. Responsible development should prioritize the preservation of the town's unique character, as well as the well-being of its current and future residents. Instead of overdevelopment, the focus should be on sustainable, balanced growth that respects Ongar's heritage.
