Growing up in a low-income household, I've faced financial uncertainty throughout my life. Like many students, I rely on the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) to access higher education and strive for a better future. However, recent cuts to OSAP threaten to increase the burden of student debt significantly, putting the dream of a college or university education out of reach for many deserving students.

OSAP's grants have made it possible for thousands of students across Ontario to pursue their academic goals without becoming overwhelmed by debt. These grants are not just financial support; they are a beacon of hope for families who have long hoped to see their children succeed in higher education. By slashing these essential aids, the government is making higher education inaccessible to those who need it most, perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

Studies have shown that educated populations experience lower unemployment rates and contribute to economic growth (Statistics Canada, 2022). By investing in grants and not loans, we empower our youth to enter the workforce debt-free, encouraging innovation and prosperity that benefits the whole province.

I urge the Ontario government to reverse the cuts to OSAP and prioritize grants to prevent skyrocketing student debt. This investment in education ensures our future workforce is robust, diverse, and competitive. Let's not turn our backs on students who are ready and willing to contribute to our society.
