The Issue

I am deeply worried about the lives of those incarcerated in Ohio, especially those placed in level three or four security facilities. These individuals, who are already enduring the heavy burden of incarceration, face an additional penalty of losing in-person visits and access to vital educational programs if House Bill 338 is passed.

Imagine being wrongfully convicted or over-sentenced, knowing that the support of your loved ones through visits may soon be stripped away. For many inmates, these visits are their sole lifeline, a connection to the outside world that offers hope and dignity. Cutting off these connections would only exacerbate an already harsh reality, potentially leading to increased desolation and mental health challenges within the prison walls.

Educational programs provide a critical pathway for rehabilitation, offering inmates the skills and knowledge they need to successfully reintegrate into society upon release. Removing these programs would undermine efforts to reduce recidivism and prepare individuals for a positive future post-incarceration.

Furthermore, consider the emotional devastation for children who might be cut off from visiting their incarcerated parents. These children, already grappling with the absence of a parent, could face enduring emotional trauma if such essential familial bonds are severed.

I have reached out to 28 Senate members to voice these concerns and urge action to halt this bill. Nevertheless, it is crucial to gather widespread public support to amplify this message.
House Bill 338 imposes unjust hardships on those serving sentences as well as their families and does nothing to facilitate the path back to a normal life after prison.  I implore you to support this cause by signing the petition to stop House Bill 338 and protect the rights and well-being of Ohio's incarcerated individuals and their families.
