Stop Offshore Gas Drilling in Victoria's Oceans - The Ocean is Rising

Stop Offshore Gas Drilling in Victoria's Oceans - The Ocean is Rising
The issue
Globally we have seen out-cry and support for Rafa, Ukraine and Ghana but right now Australia needs your help! Beach Energy Ltd, a multi-billion-dollar company has been approved to drill for gas offshore along the Great Ocean Road near the 12 Apostles in Gunditjmara Sea Country, Victoria.
Offshore gas drilling is a multi-billion-dollar industry driven by profit, not necessity, it goes directly against what our leading scientists are telling us, against Traditional Owners and coastal communities wishes. Australia is moving away from fossil fuels; we do not need this destructive practice. This issue is global, but we must act locally to prevent catastrophic environmental damage here in Australia.
Beach Energy Ltd have proposed works to commence in July 2024. If this proceeds it will only be the start in Australia and will have detrimental impacts to our land, sea, air and climate change. Our kids and future generations will be victim of this. Will you let them suffer our consequences?
- Offshore drilling is drilling into the ocean floor. This releases thousands of gallons of polluted water. The 'drilling muds' it produces contain toxic substances, including benzene, zinc, arsenic, radioactive materials and other contaminants. This is catastrophic to marine life.
- Australian Marine Conservation Society has called for community action to stop this drilling project to protect the marine life.
- The 12 Apostles is the second-largest Marine National Park in Victoria, it is heritage listed, which means it is of significant cultural historical and social value and is protected. Money buys protective decisions.
- This offshore drilling proposal is threatening the future of our oceans, critical whale migration routes and marine ecosystems found nowhere else in the world. This impacts climate change which affects you.
- Climate change is altering ecosystem productivity. The ocean sustains us. It provides oxygen, food and medicine and is a source of recreation, discovery, identity and culture.
- This area is the last regular calving grounds for southeast Australia's 300 remaining southern right whales.
- The seismic blasting from the drilling would occur directly inside crucial feeding areas for endangered pygmy blue whales.
- Offshore drilling is a major contributor to ocean oil spills. The WA oil spill-cleanup workers suffered from damaged immune, respiratory and cardiac functions and carry high levels of toxicity that have long-term consequences. Imagine what this does to our water and ecosystems.
- The long-term impacts and extent of offshore drilling and seismic blasting is still unknown.
Consultation is a crucial part of Environmental Developments. Southern Ocean Protection Embassy Collective (SOPEC) founder, Gunditjmara-Djab Wurrung woman, has been publicly advocating to ban gas projects in southern sea country. The community have engaged in beach protests and their voices have not been heard which has been a theme in Australia in 2024.
As a Gundtijmara woman myself, I am deeply concerned about the proposed offshore gas drilling in our sea Country. This activity will devastate native sea life, destroy our land, and jeopardise the future for my son and generations to come.
Please hear our voices, please act and join us in protecting our oceans and heritage by signing this petition today!
