Stop Obstructing the Plaque Honoring Jan 6th Law Enforcement

The Issue

My sense of patriotism and love for our country compels me to bring forward a pressing issue. Like many Americans, I am heartbroken to see the country I love being torn apart by conflicts and division. My concern is particularly targeted towards an issue that evidences the growing schism in our society, obstructing a well-deserved plaque to honor the law enforcement officers who protected the Capitol and its legislators on the fateful day of January 6th.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has been reported as the prime roadblock in the way of this tribute. Our police officers and security personnel risked their lives against the onslaught that day. It was a glaring attack on democracy. They did their duty, regardless of personal political affiliations, putting themselves in harm's way to ensure the safety of our democracy and its upholders. ProPublica reported that 140 officers were injured and another, Officer Brian Sicknick, tragically lost his life that day (source: ProPublica, 2021).

Preventing the erection of a plaque to honor their service sends a disheartening message not just to the law enforcement fraternity, but to every American citizen who believes in the values of unity, respect, and democratic integrity. We urge House Speaker Johnson to cease his opposition to this honor.

Our nation must recognize bravery and duty when it stares us in the face, not shove it into political debates. Let’s put patriotism and fairness before division. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with our law enforcement heroes and urge House Speaker Mike Johnson to stop obstructing the erection of this much deserved plaque.
