Stop Noise and Lead Pollution from the Montgomery County Maryland Airpark

Stop Noise and Lead Pollution from the Montgomery County Maryland Airpark
The Issue
We, the undersigned call on The Montgomery County Council and Montgomery County Airpark to take immediate action to address the detrimental effects of noise and lead pollution on the surrounding communities.
General aviation airports serve as vital transportation hubs but often come with significant environmental drawbacks, including noise pollution from aircraft operations and lead pollution from aviation fuel. These issues have severe consequences for the health, well-being, and quality of life of residents living near these airports.
Exposure to excessive aircraft noise has been linked to various health problems, including hearing loss, sleep disturbances, increased stress levels, and decreased cognitive performance. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to these effects. Additionally, lead pollution from aviation fuel poses serious health risks, especially for children, as it can impair neurological development and cause long-term cognitive deficits. (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization)
We urge the Montgomery County Council and the Montgomery County Airpark to take the following actions:
1. Implement stronger noise abatement measures, implement flight path modifications, landing fees and soundproofing initiatives to mitigate the impact of aircraft noise on surrounding communities.
2. Stop D.C. Metro from selling leaded aviation fuel and transition to unleaded aviation fuel alternatives to eliminate lead emissions and reduce the risk of lead exposure to residents and the environment.
3. Implement and conduct regular monitoring and assessment of noise and air quality to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to identify areas for improvement.
4. Engage with local communities and stakeholders to address concerns related to noise and lead pollution, and to develop collaborative solutions, provide transparency and governance over the Airpark that prioritize public health and environmental sustainability.
By taking these actions, Montgomery County representatives can demonstrate their commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the residents they were elected to serve while promoting responsible and sustainable aviation practices.
Sign this petition to join us in calling on the Montgomery County Council to prioritize the health and safety of our communities by addressing noise and lead pollution from aircraft operations.
Together, we can make a difference and create a healthier, quieter, and more environmentally friendly future for all.
