Stop Nintendo From Monopolizing Video Games

Stop Nintendo From Monopolizing Video Games
The Issue
Video games have been a cherished part of my life since childhood. Growing up with Pokémon, the love for these immersive experiences never faded; I still find joy in playing Pokémon and exploring new games. However, it's troubling to see that Nintendo is attempting to patent a game design concept so broad that it could potentially limit the creativity and diversity of the gaming industry.
Nintendo's patent focuses on any game where you can "summon characters to help battle things" which casts a wide net over not just an entire genre, but modern gaming as a whole. This broad patent could encompass gacha games, indie games, and virtually any game where characters are used in a dynamic combat setting, such as Honkai Star Rail, Dragon Quest Monsters, and beloved indie titles like Cassette Beasts and Nexomon. This patent even threatens modern multiplayer standards in many games and genres.
The gaming community thrives on diversity and innovation, with each new game offering a unique twist or experience. It's this variation that has allowed gaming to become the vibrant, multifaceted industry it is today. Patenting such a generalized idea sets a dangerous precedent, where companies could monopolize entire genres of creativity, stifling the development of new and original games.
While Nintendo has been a cornerstone in the gaming industry with its historic franchises, allowing this patent to stand would unfairly limit other developers and creators from innovating and delighting players with new experiences. The fear should not be that Nintendo's sales would suffer as a result—Pokémon and their other popular franchises have loyal followings who will continue to support them—but rather that this patent stifles the potential for variety and choice in gaming.
I love the games that broaden our horizons and introduce us to new worlds. It's time to advocate for fair competition and creativity in the gaming world by asking Nintendo to reconsider this burdensome patent. Sign this petition to urge Nintendo to relinquish their hold on this overly broad patent, ensuring that the gaming industry remains a haven for creativity and exploration. Let's keep gaming innovative and accessible for everyone.
