The Issue

Countless families across the United States are crying out against the encroachment of professional football into their Christmas season, and Christmas Day in particular. In the last few years, starting in 2022, the NFL has started playing regularly occurring games on Christmas Day, which has been bad for family time and other entertainment options. Continuing down this road, in 2024, the NFL has been capitalizing on the advent of paid streaming services, by making Netflix the home of NFL games on Christmas Day, with two games on the holiday. And, in 2025, Amazon Prime Video is also streaming an NFL game on Christmas Day, in addition to Netflix continuing with their two-game streaming setup. Viewership was for NFL Christmas Day was substantially less in 2024 than 2023, "[2024] brought in about 5 million fewer viewers than did [2023] Christmas afternoon games" (Porter, The Hollywood Reporter). Even with this drop in viewership, Netflix and now Prime Video are doubling down on NFL Christmas, and taking away from established traditions. Christmas should not become just another "NFL day", especially with the league and streaming services trying to profit off the holiday with the decision to stream games on the holiday, rather than make time for family on Christmas Day.

Thanksgiving, a time for family unity and gratitude, is already dominated by the touchdown cheer, but in 2025, attempts are being made to invade the sanctity of Christmas Day with NFL games. These are not good, the consumer would have to pay money to watch, businesses are focused on making money, sports betting becoming a potential mainstay of Christmas, which was unthinkable five years ago, and the normalization of working on religious holidays that only come once a year. This is threatening the unity and harmony of our families' celebration, and making Christmas about money, greed, and selfishness, rather than joy and giving. We can do something about this by letting streaming services know that we will not be watching NFL games on Christmas Day, and force a strategy change from Netflix, and more recently, Amazon Prime Video.

Many might argue that we could choose not to watch, with the NFL games being aired elsewhere, but this solution could leave football fan members of the family upset or worse cause them to skip the family gathering to watch the game somewhere else. Football, which is supposed to bring joy and leisure, should not be the cause of such division within families.

Continuing to cross the line and air games on paid streaming services into Christmas Day, and against what families want for the holiday with sports betting continuing to be promoted in the leadup to Christmas, is multiple steps too far. Respect the tradition that exists and has been cherished by families together. We need to convey this to the NFL, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, and push them to stop the paid streaming, broadcasting of games on Christmas Day.

Support this cause, join us and sign the petition. Let the NFL, Netflix, and Amazon know we want to regain the sanctity of our Christmas gatherings.
