The recent decision by New South Wales Maritime to increase the license fees for personal watercraft (PWC) by a staggering 88% and registration costs by 35% is both unfair and unjustified. This hike places an undue financial burden on recreational users and small business owners who rely on these vessels for their livelihood. With no clear justification or significant improvements in services, this fee increase seems arbitrary and excessive. Contrary to a statement made by NSW Maritime on their website “As such, the higher fees are directly reflective of the increased resources and efforts required by NSW Maritime to regulate this user group” These exorbitant costs will only lead to more people riding unlicensed & unregistered, which could increase safety risks on our waters. We need fair and reasonable measures that address the behaviour of a few without penalising responsible riders. The penalty for riding unlicensed or unregistered on a PWC still sits at only a $500 penalty notice. We urge New South Wales Maritime to reconsider this decision and implement a more reasonable fee structure.
