Stop Netflix From Tracking and Targeting Kids' Data
The Issue
For years, Netflix told its subscribers it wouldn't track their personal data or sell it to advertisers. Now Florida's Attorney General says that promise wasn't true.
According to a lawsuit filed this week in St. Johns County, Florida, Netflix spent years quietly building a system to collect and analyze subscriber data, then used it to launch a full advertising business in November 2022, the very kind of tracking it had told customers it would never do. The lawsuit also raises concerns about how the platform's kids' profiles are designed, arguing certain features are built to keep children glued to the screen rather than protect them.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier put it plainly: "If a company is going to be monitoring every single click and scroll and swipe then you need to put people on notice," he said, adding that families, not corporations, should be the ones deciding how children spend their time online.
Parents trusted Netflix's promises when they signed up and when they set up profiles for their kids. If a company can quietly reverse a privacy commitment once it becomes profitable, that trust means nothing, and it's families who pay the price with their data and their children's attention.
Netflix should come clean about what it collects, roll back design features aimed at keeping kids hooked, and honor the privacy promises it made to every subscriber, old and new.
Sign the petition to demand Netflix stop tracking and targeting kids' data, before more families are misled.
