Why it Matters

The recent decision by the NSW Government to cut in half Moore Park Golf Course and reduce to 9-holes will severely impact access to golf in Sydney, with a disproportionate impact on women and young people.

Australia’s Most Accessible Golf Course

Moore Park Golf Course offers an exceptional golfing experience, open to the entire community seven days a week. It’s an affordable championship course located conveniently near Sydney’s CBD and major transport links. Halving this already very busy course risks denying access to golf for those that cannot afford or get to expensive alternative options to play.

Golf is a sport that brings people together, regardless of gender, age, or skill level. It promotes physical and mental well-being, fosters inclusiveness, and strengthens the bonds of community and camaraderie. During the pandemic, it became a safe and cherished outlet, and it continues to enjoy significant growth in popularity, particularly among women and kids.

“Thank you to the more than 32,000 people who have signed this petition. Your voice is being heard, and the NSW Liberals and Nationals stand with you. The Minns Labor Government has ignored a win-win compromise put forward by golfers; one that would have protected the full 18-hole Moore Park Golf Course while still delivering additional public green space. Instead, Labor has pressed ahead with a plan that satisfies no one, cutting Moore Park to 12 holes and beginning to fence off sections of the course despite the scale of community opposition this petition clearly demonstrates. Labor has tried to frame this as a choice between golf and open space, however we know that isn’t the case. Anyone who spends time at Moore Park knows there is already substantial publicly accessible green space surrounding the course. This is one of Australia's most popular and affordable public golf facilities, not an exclusive private club, and it's been used by people from all corners of Sydney for generations. Labor wants to lock golfers out of part of it; the NSW Liberals and Nationals don't think that's good enough. There are also serious questions about cost: the Government has budgeted $50 million for the Moore Park South Establishment Plan, but its own business case reportedly shows the true cost is four times that figure. The public deserves to know what this project will actually cost before it goes further. When Parliament resumes in August, the NSW Liberals and Nationals will move amendments to the Greater Sydney Parklands Bill 2026 requiring all reasonable steps be taken to retain the full 18-hole course. NSW Liberal Leader, Kellie Sloane, has also indicated that we will be pushing for a Parliamentary Inquiry into Moore Park, as there are still so many questions that the Government must answer. We are calling on the Premier to hit pause on this project and take the compromise golfers have offered. We'll keep supporters updated as this moves through Parliament. Chris Rath Liberal MLC & Whip”
