Stop MOE's New catering system!!

The Issue

MOE’s intro of the new centralised kitchen model is proving controversial. The new model allows schools to order from catering services, namely SATS among others, which is indirectly owned by the government via Temasek Holdings, a government-owned SWF (Sovereign Wealth Fund) that holds significant stakes in SATS. It is not impossible that the government, through this system, is indirectly awarding contracts to itself, creating a conflict of interest.

this petition is to call for a halt and revision of it.

furthermore, SATS has been the centre of attention after reports of bland and unappetising bento meals prepared by them being served to students in schools under the new programme, namely Hwa Chong, which has allegedly taken disciplinary action against students who spoke out against the meals to the lianhe zaobao. This is a blatant alleged act of silencing feedback and unhappiness amongst students. The bento meals provided have been compared to SAF cookhouse meals and r reported to have undesirable portions. Additionally, the bland taste reported by some students is all the more concerning. :(

the new centralised kitchen model is undesired by many students in sg. This adds on to the reasons why a major overhaul of the system, or a reversion to the old system, is needed. The problem this new model is supposedly meant to address is the lack of canteen vendors, yet the solution implemented is a blanket one that fails to account for other alternatives. One such alternative is the adoption of a Japan/Korea-style catering service, where instead of a central kitchen which quite frankly allows for less feedback and less variety of food, the Japan/Korea-inspired model allows for greater feedback and improvement of canteen food. Plus more choices for students (yayy).

another solution wld be to provide incentives for canteen holders and ease the extremely strict dietary regulations. While dietary regulations r important, they fail to account for how difficult they make operating a stall for canteen vendors and how they deter potential vendors. Stall rental costs r also another factor to consider. Faced with these reasons and clearly better alternative systems, improvements or adaptations, surely this centralised kitchen model shld be suspended or scrapped, and a new relook of the current system shld happen, or a reversion to the old system with improvements made.

this petition is to call for a halt and revision of it.
