The Issue

The glorification of contemporary activists and the branding of their protests as a “Second Freedom Movement” have become a disturbing trend. This casual mislabeling does not just misrepresent the motivations and achievements of current movements but also dangerously understates the genuine struggles and sacrifices made by our actual freedom fighters. This is personal to us, as we are deeply rooted in the acknowledgement of our true historical heroes, such as Krishna (Kristo) Jiban Sanyal of Malda, whose contributions to our nation’s freedom are well-documented and deserving of the highest respect.

Krishna Jiban Sanyal, an ardent freedom fighter born around 1893 in Malda, dedicated his life to the cause of Indian independence, living through hardship and displaying bravery without any desire for recognition or fame. He and his peers are the epitome of selflessness and commitment to the greater good of our society, inspiring generations with their unyielding spirit and dedication. Misbranding today's protests as a continuation or the evolution into a "Second Freedom Movement" undermines the gravity and uniqueness of their sacrifice.

To preserve the sanctity of their contributions, it's critical to accurately represent present movements for what they are, allowing them to stand on their own merit. If today's movements are to make a mark and demand rightful change, they must do so with authenticity, free from historical misappropriation. Instead of diminishing the past's profound struggles, acknowledging the unique context of current protests can foster a more honest and potent form of advocacy.

We call upon the media, social influencers, and public figures to cease this superficial analogy and distinguish the earnest efforts of modern movements by celebrating them for their distinct contexts, goals, and achievements. Let's honor the truth of our past while empowering today's initiatives on their own pioneering paths.

We need your support to ensure both the integrity of historical representation and the authentic acknowledgment of contemporary social movements. Sign this petition to urge media outlets and public figures to stop misrepresentative branding and, instead, appreciate the unique attributes of respective movements. Join us in safeguarding the legacy of the real heroes of our past while supporting the honest aspirations of today’s advocates.
