From Mayor Peyton Jamison, “the trails and sidewalks are being removed from the Safe Streets plan.

Our fight is NOT over.

City Manager Steve Krokoff said, “… there should be one primary forum for trails discussions, and that should be the Trails Committee.

This unelected body sits in council chambers, looks at a map, and makes decisions without ever visiting the roads and corridors their decisions affect—the rural view shed, the horse pastures, and the private property their decisions destroy.

City Manager Krokoff also said, “I think we need to step back and clearly define the city’s mission regarding trails, sidewalks, and other pedestrian connections.”

We need to make our voices heard during this process—and that means attending and speaking at the Milton Trails Advisory Committee (MTAC) meetings and at regular city council meetings.

Why is attending these meetings so important?

As the City Manager also said, “This is the group (MTAC) best positioned to help the city sort through those competing priorities in a public, transparent, and thoughtful way. Their work can help ensure that any recommendations brought forward are grounded in community input, respect the character of different parts of Milton, and reflect a clear understanding of what we are actually trying to accomplish.”

At the May 7, 2026 Milton Comprehensive Plan (CPAC) Meeting, chair Judy Birds said, “ … the number of signs highly against the multi use trail along Redd, along Hopewell, along all those other roads out there. There is STRONG local resistance to that and the signs just increase everyday.” “… so I think it is a real conflict and I think a lot of the neighbors up there are weighing in on keeping the rural viewshed, we don’t need the path.”

WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Milton has  eight distinct character areas.

Milton GA Character Area Map

Each character area—and its boundaries—need to be enforced and defended as defined by the 2040 comprehensive plan.

How you can help:

  • Attend and comment at city council meetings and speak up about defending Milton’s character areas.
  • Attend and comment at MTAC meetings or watch online if you cannot attend. The city is giving this committee unprecedented power to define the look and feel of Milton. If these members do not hear from a lot of us, they will never know there is opposition to any of their priorities.
  • Stay engaged. They are counting on us to feel relieved and stop paying attention. They have money to spend and will find ways to spend it with or without community input.
  • Email our city council members. Their names and email addresses are at the bottom of this petition along with a link to the city’s meetings calendar.

Comments to council and the MTAC committee don’t need to be elaborate. State who you are, why you care, and what you care about. End by asking them to defend our character areas.

Once our rural landscape is destroyed, it can never be reclaimed.

The city of Milton has embarked on a project to develop shared-use paths along our rural corridors including Freemanville, Hopewell, and Redd roads. This plan threatens not just the beauty of our community but also the essence of the rural charm that defines Milton.

Shared-use paths are not only visually intrusive as they require clearing trees and grass, but are in direct opposition to the commitment made throughout the 2040 Comprehensive Plan to preserve our rural viewshed. In addition, they pave the way for personal transportation vehicles like golf carts being allowed to utilize these pathways that will forever alter Milton's rural character.

The city introduced this project under the heading, "Safety in Action," when anyone who has traveled along Freemanville, Hopewell, and Redd roads knows cars travel too fast for any width of sidewalk to be considered "safe."

As a farm owner along Hopewell where the proposed 10-foot shared-use path will come within arms length of my front pasture--and our horses--I vehemently oppose this project.

It is crucial to take immediate action to protect our rural corridors. Please join us in standing up for Milton's rural landscape and sign this petition to stop the construction of shared-use paths.

After you sign, please consider attending the next city council meeting (Milton calendar) or calling and/or emailing our city council and urging them to reconsider the current plans and preserve the rural landscape of Milton.
