Uswitch: compare eenergy prices and see if you can save*
Hey everyone,
I know this isn't directly related to the petition against Ofcom's mid-contract price rises, but we're in a cost-of-living crisis and I'm trying to do what I can to help people through it, including you guys. The energy price cap is going up in October, it's almost definitely going to rise again in January, and it's current predicted to rise again in April too, so I really recommend fixing your tariff before the end of September, but as soon as possible in case the good deals go.
So, two things from me today, first, I'm producing a table every week of the cheapest energy tariffs available on Uswitch. The link above shows this week's table. Uswitch have an exclusive deal with British Gas and they're offering a decent 12 month fixed rate deal, its currently around £95 cheaper than the expected October price cap, £140 cheaper than the January predicted cap and around £160 cheaper than the April predicted price cap, so there are reasonable savings to be had. It's the cheapest one I've seen in the last month since Ofgem announced the cap going up, so I thought I'd share it with you guys. As a reminder: if you stay on a variable tariff then you are subject to price rises/falls every 3 months, whereas a fixed tariff doesn't change price for the term of the contract (usually 12 or 24 months).
NOTE: when running a price comparison, the comparison tool cannot take into consideration future expected price rises, quite simply Uswitch aren't allowed to predict the future. So the savings figure you see will be based on either this current cap period or the October cap period. This means that if the cap goes up in January and April (as it is predicted to) then you'll actually have LARGER savings from the fixed rate tariffs you sign up to today, but Uswitch cannot show you this. Whilst pretty much every energy expect expects the price cap to go up in January and April, it's worth noting that we also cannot see the future and so, we may be wrong.
If you want to stay up-to-date with these tables, or any other energy updates I post, please subscribe to my newsletter at TheRegulatorGuy.co.uk. There are other money-saving services on my website, including broadband and mobile phone price comparison, and insurance price comparison for home, car, motorbike, life and pet insurances.
Secondly, please see the video I did last week about my meeting with Ofcom about our petition. In the video I discuss 4 paths I'd like to take simultaneously, so please give it a watch and then email me your thoughts at Richard@TheRegulatorGuy.co.uk.
Thanks everyone, I'll be back in a couple of days with a proper update on the next steps for this petition.
*Disclaimer: The Uswitch link is an affiliate link. This means that if you click it, run a price comparison and ultimately switch service provider, I will receive a commission. This commission helps fund the regulatory work that I do and keeps my services free to you. The commission does NOT increase the price you pay for the services, you'll see the same prices whether you go through the links above, through the price comparison site directly or if you go direct to the service provider.
Cheers,
Richard Winstone
