The Issue

Ignoring citizen outcry - plans were made to bring Princess Cruise Lines to Yorktown, Virginia. And just recently a Princess Lobbyist stated that they are still looking for a port on the York River. It is essential that any future plans to bring ocean-class mega-cruise ships to the York River or Virginia waters is stopped given the current practices of this industry.

Over 3 football fields long - ocean-class cruise ships should not be allowed to come to small river communities like Yorktown. We ask that concerned citizens speak out against these ships that can radically alter the character of communities they come too. Many port communities around the world are fighting to protect public health and the marine ecosystem from these character-altering ships.

Princess Cruise ships pollute the environment. Think of the continuous emissions from a floating city with over 3000 residents generating mega-watts of power. Princess Cruise Lines was criminally convicted for deliberately dumping contaminated waste and intentional efforts to cover up its actions. The York River system supports diverse fauna (oysters, blue crabs, menhaden, drum, dolphin, and much more) enjoyed by both tourists and locals. This complex and fragile ecosystem needs our protection. Virginia’s billion-dollar seafood industry depends on healthy waters. Cruise ship pollution directly impacts oyster and clam production.

Please speak out now to protect Yorktown and other Virginia communities from cruise industry expansion by signing this petition.
