Stop Mayor Cherelle Parker's Unjust "Neighborhood Sweeps" in Kensington

The Issue

As a recovering addict, I am deeply disturbed by the recent actions of Mayor Cherelle Parker in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The mayor has authorized what are being called "neighborhood sweeps/"jump outs" which involve unmarked police vehicles with several officers, not in full police uniform  stopping and searching individuals at any given time, often resulting in arrests. This is harassment and intimidation.  This is not only a gross violation of civil liberties but also an act that instills fear and distrust within our community.

Moreover, these operations are carried out by heavily armed agents, further escalating tensions and creating an atmosphere of intimidation. In many instances, people are taken away while their belongings - sometimes all they own - are left behind on the streets.

This approach to dealing with addiction is not only ineffective but also cruel. According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), punitive measures do little to curb substance abuse rates or aid recovery efforts. Instead, they often lead to cycles of incarceration that exacerbate social and economic inequalities.

We need a compassionate approach that focuses on providing support services for those struggling with addiction rather than criminalizing them. We urge Mayor Parker to reconsider her policies and put an end to these harmful neighborhood sweeps in Kensington.

Please sign this petition if you believe in justice, compassion, and effective solutions for our community's challenges related to substance abuse.
