The Issue

In the quiet, rural town of Tazewell, Tennessee, nestled in the serene landscape of Claiborne County, we cherish our privacy and the peaceful pace of life that many urban areas have lost. Yet, a new threat looms over our community’s serenity and autonomy—Flock cameras. These devices, marketed under the guise of increased safety, actually infringe upon our freedoms, sell our personal data to the highest bidder, and, contrary to claims of added security, potentially endanger our children more than protect them.

Flock Safety, the company behind these cameras, has installed them in various neighborhoods under the pretext of reducing crime. However, what they fail to disclose is how this surveillance technology amasses data that can be exploited, leading to potential misuse and violations of privacy. In Tazewell, once a haven of tranquility and community trust, we’re witnessing a concerning shift similar to that happening in bigger cities like Knoxville, Gatlinburg, and Maryville, where personal data is treated as a commodity, with little regard for consent or transparency.

Statistics reveal the misuse of similar surveillance systems in other towns. According to multiple privacy rights organizations, communities equipped with these cameras often experience an uptick in false accusations and unwarranted scrutiny by local authorities. The presence of such technology fosters an environment of distrust, where law-abiding citizens are monitored and cataloged as if they were potential criminals.

Furthermore, these cameras don’t inherently improve safety. Research conducted by the Urban Institute stated that there’s scant tangible evidence that blanket surveillance materially reduces crime rates. Instead, these cameras often become tools for expanding local law enforcement's reach without proper oversight, leading to an erosion of civil liberties and fostering fear among residents.

We are not only risking our personal data and privacy but jeopardizing the very fabric of the community spirit that defines Tazewell. Our children deserve to grow up in an environment where they feel safe and free from being constantly watched by anonymous, algorithm-driven systems that cannot differentiate between a genuine threat and everyday behavior.

Our town must stand together and say no to this invasive technology. We urge local authorities to reconsider their stance on the deployment of Flock cameras and to engage with the community to explore alternatives that truly prioritize safety without sacrificing our rights. Solutions grounded in community engagement, improved street lighting, neighborhood watch programs, and fostering relationships between residents and local law enforcement can effectively enhance safety without the intrusive surveillance methods that Flock cameras deploy.

Your voice is crucial in protecting the privacy and character of our cherished hometown. Sign this petition to halt the installation of Flock cameras, and to have them removed in Tazewell and advocate for protection methods that respect our privacy while truly working towards a safer community for us and our children. Let’s preserve the Tazewell we know and love.
