The Issue

I started this petition because we need to act before mass surveillance becomes normalized in our communities.

The Town of Yarmouth needs to take action and ban invasive surveillance services like Flock before it is too late.

Public safety should not come at the cost of turning our town into a place where everyone is constantly tracked.

Yarmouth deserves safety measures that protect residents’ rights, not technology that creates new risks.

Across the United States, an increasing number of communities are adopting surveillance technologies, such as Flock cameras, which have the capabilities to collect and store comprehensive information about where people travel on a daily basis. While these systems are frequently promoted as measures for public safety, they simultaneously raise serious privacy concerns that cannot be overlooked.

The potential for abuse of these surveillance tools is well-documented. In the United States alone, there have been over 20 investigations into law enforcement officers misusing access to police databases and surveillance tools to stalk, harass, and in some instances, specifically target/attack women. These alarming incidents demonstrate that even those entrusted to protect public safety can and do misuse surveillance data, compromising the security and privacy of innocent citizens.

When communities normalize such extensive surveillance, it creates an environment where privacy is consistently undermined, and personal data is constantly vulnerable to misuse. The introduction of mass surveillance at the community level often occurs with little to no input from community members themselves. We must be involved in the legislation before it happens here too.

It is crucial to take a stand before the omnipresence of these technologies becomes an accepted norm. By signing this petition, you are joining a collective voice demanding accountability and transparency from our local governments. We call for regulations and oversight to ensure that individual privacy rights are protected and respected.

Together, let's make our voices heard to halt the unchecked expansion of surveillance systems in our neighborhoods. Sign this petition to stop mass surveillance, protect our privacy, and stand up for our rights.
