The Issue

The idea of mass medicating an entire population is a deeply concerning issue for many of us, including myself. I care deeply about this issue because it affects over 12 million people in the UK who have cancer, stents, low vitamin B12, are on medications such as aspirin, lithium, sulfasalazine, undergo kidney dialysis, or suffer from epilepsy. These individuals need to avoid exposure to synthetic folic acid due to potential detrimental health impacts.

The Government's decision to fortify flour with synthetic folic acid without the consent or knowledge of these citizens raises severe ethical questions. Folic acid is a laboratory made drug, medication, and it's an unwarranted and unjustified addition to one of our staple foods threatens public health for the sake of a potential benefit to a very small minority group. I believe it's also a breach of the Food Safety Act.

The NHS itself highlights that sections of the population should avoid folic acid exposure for its possible adverse effects. For instance, those with colorectal cancer are advised to limit their intake due to its potential to accelerate tumor growth. Furthermore, individuals with cardiovascular stents, low levels of Vitamin B12, or on specific medications like anti-seizure drugs could face serious health risks like seizures, exacerbated medical conditions, or interactions with existing medications due to excess folic acid.

With folic acid being introduced to so many products made with white flour the risk of overdosing is a real concern as many people will easily consume over the safe daily limit of 200mcg for adults and children over 11 years of age and younger children must consume lower amounts (British Diabetic Association)  thereby putting people at risk of unnecessary harm. Not only this but manufacturers are also putting it into wholemeal flour which is supposed to be exempt.

There has already been two studies done linking excess folic acid with an increase of 20% cancer risk for women and double the risk of men getting prostate cancer - even more concerning as the government recently removed  the PSA tests for white men.

There needs to be a more informed debate on this issue. This measure feels like an overreach when individual health care needs should be addressed with personalised medical advice, not generalized food policies. Encouraging individual health professionals to assess and prescribe folic acid where truly needed ensures ethical standards are maintained and unwanted side effects are minimized.

I urge the Government to reconsider its position on folic acid fortification. Instead, we should focus on educating the public about safe and targeted supplementation routes, ensuring that everyone has a choice and is informed about the substances they consume. We must prioritize transparency and the autonomy of individuals to decide what is best for their health.

Help us make our voices heard by signing this petition. It’s time to put an end to this unethical practice of mass medication. Let’s protect the health of those who may be adversely affected by this blanket policy. Sign now to call upon the Government to stop fortifying flour with synthetic folic acid.
