The Issue

I've seen the conditions in which marine mammals are kept at SeaWorld in San Diego, and it is appalling. The brilliant creatures, who belong in the ocean, are confined to small tanks that can never compare to their natural habitats. This is a call to action to uphold the dignity and well-being of these intelligent beings by ending their captivity.

Marine mammals such as orcas, dolphins, and sea lions are highly intelligent and social animals that thrive in the wild oceans, swimming long distances and interacting in complex social structures. In captivity, they suffer both physically and mentally due to confinement and lack of stimulation. Evidence shows that the lifespan of orcas in captivity is significantly shorter than those in the wild, and they often exhibit signs of distress and abnormal behavior due to the restrictive environment.

The city of San Diego, known for its rich marine biodiversity and beautiful coastlines, has an opportunity to lead by example. It's time for the city's leadership to enact laws or regulations that prohibit the captivity of marine mammals for entertainment purposes. We can promote instead the development of more engaging and educational experiences that respect the natural lives of these animals, such as virtual reality exhibits, documentaries or even partnering with marine conservation organizations to advocate for ocean protection while engaging the public.

The call for change is not just about liberating the animals but also about fostering a deeper understanding and respect for marine life among the people. It's about shifting our perception and interactions with these incredible beings, ensuring that future generations will enjoy them in the wild where they belong.

As a high school student, I urge Mayor of San Diego and local legislators to consider the wellbeing of these creatures and the ethical implications of marine mammal captivity. Let's take a stand in preserving the integrity and freedom of our marine friends.

Please sign this petition to demand action from the city of San Diego to stop marine mammal captivity and establish a sanctuary or rehabilitation program in place of SeaWorld's current practices. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals and set a positive example for cities around the world.
