Stop Mandatory Uniforms in Cheraw and New Heights Middle Schools

The Issue

In Chesterfield County, only two schools — Long Middle School (Cheraw) and New Heights Middle School  (Pageland/Jefferson)— require their students to wear uniforms.

This isn't applied across the county, and the differentiation bears questioning, particularly as communities and parents voice their concern over the unequal treatment.

Current statistics on the racial demographic of these two areas reveal that such distinctions could be perpetuating systemic inequalities. Uniforms are paraded as neutralizing disparities among students, yet enforcing this only in selected schools amplifies feeling of separation and unfair treatment. The idea of a dress code might be intended to create equality, but it can feel as though the policy speaks differently to the students of Cheraw and Pageland.

With the recent appointment of a new superintendent, there is hope and opportunity for inclusive and fair practices that respect our diverse community.

Join me in urging the school board and the superintendent to reevaluate the uniform policy.

Call for a change now. Sign this petition to ensure that all students in Chesterfield County are treated equally, either by requiring uniforms for all or not at all.
