Stop mandatory French in Canadian schools and instead make it optional

Stop mandatory French in Canadian schools and instead make it optional
The Issue
Learning a language while juggling more than three other subjects has been incredibly tiring and challenging. I never wished to learn French, but I have no choice or say in the matter. Finding time to study French is daunting, especially with the demands of math, and it's making it difficult to maintain good grades in this tough economy. It's frustrating to excel in mathematics, earning an A+, only to be judged by schools for receiving a B or C in French. The pressure to learn French detracts from my ability to focus on subjects where I can truly excel and pursue my passions.
French is one of Canada’s official languages, and in many regions, it is a requirement in the educational system. However, the option to study other languages like Spanish, Mandarin, or German, should also be available to students. Making French an optional subject would allow students the freedom to choose a language that aligns with their interests, career goals, or cultural heritage. Many European countries have successfully implemented flexible language programs where students can choose which languages to learn, based on personal interest and career prospects.
We propose that Canadian schools offer French as an elective rather than a mandatory subject. By making French an optional language, schools can cater to diverse student interests and better prepare them for the global market. This model can lead to a more engaged and motivated student body, fostering an educational environment that respects individual choice and diverse aspirations.
Moreover, allowing students the autonomy to design their own learning paths can lead to higher engagement and achievement across all subjects, not just languages. Studies have shown that students perform better when they are invested in their learning choices, translating to higher overall satisfaction and academic success.
I urge the Canadian educational authorities and policymakers to reconsider the mandatory status of French in schools, allowing students the freedom to choose a language of interest and focus on subjects that will help them succeed in today's competitive world. By removing this requirement, we can create a more equitable and supportive educational system.
And I do not mean only have this option for high school we should have this option from grade 4.
Please sign this petition to support making French an optional subject in Canadian schools and empower students to shape their educational journeys.
