This petition has arisen from personal circumstances concerning my daughter, Susan McEwan, who was employed by AirNZ as an International Flight concierge travelling between Auckland NZ and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver, USA. She began to feel unwell and between 2008 and 2012 she was driven to consult ten General Practitioners in six Medical Practices on two cities, Auckland and Napier. (Facts established by Health and Disability Commission.) Susan visited the G.P.'s often in an acute state because of back pain, extreme tiredness, recurring abdominal and pelvic pain, abdominal bloating and back pain.
Many times she was seen by a G.P. with no recognition of the gravity of her increasing undiagnosed cancer. She often complained to her sister that she was not taken seriously and sent home to rest. Susan suffered this for four years and was diligent in trying to ascertain the cause of her symptoms, until she was finally seen by a female medical intern, who had seen the symptoms before and sent her for the correct tests, a CA 125 and a MRI scan which confirmed she suffered from ovarian cancer stage 3C. .
Susan died on 10th April 2014 after bravely fighting this cancer for two more years. All research points to the fact that cancer must be diagnosed early for patients to survive. How could Susan have been failed, not once but by ten G.P.'s over four years. There are no excuses! Also there have been no repercussions. These G.P.'s continue to practise with their dubious diagnostic skills.
There are many more cases similar to Susan's and people need a Health Review Office, similar to the Education Review office in education, which is tax payer funded, for total reassurance amid an independent monitoring system with accountability for diagnostic failures and subsequent lack of specialist referrals by G.P.'s.
By contrast in Education there are many organisations reviewing teaching practitioners, the schools and delivery of curriculum. These include but are not limited to, Education Review Office, Teacher Registration Board, Teacher Disciplinary Board, Police Check, Board of Trustees, School Trustees Association and a newly created one called Teachers' Council of Aotearoa, all tax payer funded. It is imperative that there must be more monitoring of General Practitioners and accountability for their diagnoses and subsequent treatment. It is unacceptable that patients like Susan, and there are many, have to suffer such negligence. Confidence must be returned to a visit to a G.P.
