Stop Liberty Mutual and other Large Insurers from Preying on the Elderly and Disabled

The Issue

My elderly Mother with Alzheimers came close to losing her home due to a predatory, knowingly dishonest practice by Liberty Mutual. By the time I caught what was happening, they had increased her premiums to 500% of the true market rates and she was foregoing necessary medical and living expenses to pay the bill.

The story of my Mother, suffering from Alzheimer's, is a heart wrenching illustration of an egregious issue affecting many elderly and disabled Americans: being at the mercy of predatory auto-charges and artificial egregious rate increases by large home insurers like Liberty Mutual.

As I dug deeper into her financial situation, I found she was on the precipice of losing her home, having sacrificed other necessary expenses just to cover the grossly inflated Liberty Mutual bills. When I requested a new quote from Liberty Mutual for the same home, and for the same persons covered, the resulting price was a fraction of the cost they were charging to my disabled mother. In fact, the market rate for the same coverage was less than a third of what Liberty Mutual was demanding. It turns out that they were silently increasing her rates at more than 30% per year, year over year, and then auto-charging her the new premium without her approval.

They target the elderly and disabled, who do not have the capability or knowledge to challenge the new rates and upcharge necessary insurance coverage to rates often exceeding 500% of the market rate. For my elderly disabled mother, the premium was inflated to roughly $7000 per year on a small house in rural Michigan. Essentially, their practice is to continue enormous unsupported rate increases every year and just hope Vulnerable people don't notice the new charges or don't understand how inappropriate those charges may be.

Such exploitative practices are not limited to my mother's case. According to a report by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), insurance premiums vary widely even among policyholders with similar risk profiles. Often, it is the elderly, disabled and financially unsophisticated who end up paying more; they are less likely to switch insurers and therefore become easy targets. This cruel reality unveils a sector riddled with indifferent profit-driven practices, treating those who should be protected with dignity, as mere profit sources instead.

Let's be clear, this is not an "oversight" by Liberty Mutual, they very clearly understand that charging insanely out of market rates through an "auto renew" mechanic will target the elderly, disabled and vulnerable. They are padding their bottom lines by exploiting these people. In fact, when I contacted Liberty Mutual and was escalated to their "Presidential Service Team", they blamed it on "inflation", ignoring the simple fact that apparently they sell the same insurance today at a massively lower cost despite their "inflation" excuse. This is an accepted business practice they use to profit off the suffering their vulnerable clients.

We must stand up against such predatory practices, demanding stricter regulations that protect our vulnerable citizens from financial exploitation. This is not just for my mother; it's for every senior, every disabled individual, who have, in good faith, paid their premiums only to be taken advantage of by large, national insurers like Liberty Mutual. Let's end financial elder abuse by large insurers.

Force them to at least stop silently auto-renewing these policies at prices far higher than at what they would sell the same policy to a new, non-disabled customer.

Sign this petition to urge our policy makers to investigate and introduce regulations that will uphold the rights and dignity of our vulnerable citizens.
