Stop LGBTQ Conversion Therapy In NZ

Stop LGBTQ Conversion Therapy In NZ
The issue
Growing up in New Zealand, I had a close friend named Alex who identified as gay. He was vibrant, witty, and unapologetically himself. But as we entered our teenage years, Alex confided in me about the pressure he felt from his conservative family to suppress his sexuality. They believed that being gay was a sin, a deviation from their religious beliefs that needed to be corrected. Tragically, this led to Alex being enrolled in conversion therapy, becoming depressed and suicidal as a result.
Conversion therapy casts a dark shadow over the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in New Zealand, impacting their mental health, well-being, and fundamental human rights. Those subjected to conversion therapy often endure psychological trauma, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation as a result of being coerced or forced into efforts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. This harmful practice particularly affects vulnerable youth who may face pressure from family members, religious communities, or other authority figures.
The stakes are high when it comes to banning conversion therapy in New Zealand. Without decisive action, LGBTQ+ individuals will continue to suffer profound harm, their identities invalidated and their autonomy stripped away. Failure to ban conversion therapy perpetuates a culture of discrimination and stigma, sending a message that it is acceptable to attempt to change someone's innate identity. However, by enacting a ban, New Zealand can send a powerful message of affirmation and support to its LGBTQ+ population, safeguarding their rights and dignity.
Now more than ever, New Zealand must take immediate action to ban conversion therapy. The recognition of LGBTQ+ rights and the understanding of the harm caused by conversion therapy have never been more widespread. International momentum towards banning conversion therapy is growing, with several countries enacting legislation to protect their LGBTQ+ citizens. By acting swiftly, New Zealand can join this global movement toward equality and justice. Every moment of delay means more LGBTQ+ individuals at risk of enduring the trauma of conversion therapy. It is imperative that New Zealand acts now to protect the rights and well-being of all its citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
