Stop LG & others spying on us through our TVs. Stop them stealing our data.
The Issue
As a dedicated consumer who has been loyal to the LG brand for years, I am concerned about the intrusive practices I recently discovered associated with their products. Upon watching a recent security exposè by YouTuber Gamers Nexus link where they tested LG TVs along with other makes, I was astounded to find out the extent of their monitoring capabilities. Eavesdropping on us even when we think it is off and on standby. They claim ownership over your glass – but what does that mean really? Hidden within labyrinthine terms and conditions, and tucked away in covert settings, LG and other companies have taken liberties with our privacy that many of us could hardly fathom.
When I buy a TV, I expect high-quality entertainment, not to be treated as a data source. Yet, by agreeing to these conditions, I unwittingly allowed LG not only to track my viewing habits but also to screen capture, log data, and eavesdrop on my private conversations. It's deeply unsettling to know that my data could be sent back to their servers, only to be sold to marketing firms or, worse, shared with entities without any transparency.
This is not merely a personal security issue but a global privacy threat. One that demands transparency, responsibility, and respect for consumer rights. According to a study by the Consumer Reports, only 55% of smart TV manufacturers clearly stated in their privacy policies that they engage in these practices. Meanwhile, a staggering 75% of consumers are unaware of the personal data being collected by their devices.
It is imperative that companies, such as LG, be transparent about their data collection practices and provide their customers with simple, comprehensible terms that clearly outline the extent of data usage. They should guarantee that such data is used ethically, strictly for improving the user experience and not sold or used without explicit consent.
Concrete steps must be taken to ensure transparency and accountability from LG and similar companies. They need to inform consumers through clear, visible notifications about data policies upon device activation. Furthermore, there should be a straightforward opt-out option where consumers can choose not to have their data collected or shared.
By signing this petition, you are joining a movement demanding change for the sake of consumer privacy. Let's stand together to ensure that transparency prevails, and companies respect our fundamental rights. Hold LG accountable and set a precedent that such invasive practices are unacceptable. Demand that your data remains under your control. Please sign this petition today and make your voice heard.
