Jockey Club Data Shows that NOT RACING Horses Has Biggest Impact on Reducing Horse Deaths

California Horse Racing Board Executive Director Chaney recently bragged in a Board Meeting about the drop in 2025 Horse Deaths from 2008 (63%) and 2019 (69.5%), BUT per the Jockey Club 2026 Fact Book, the number of 2025 California Horse Racing Starts dropped 68% from 2008 and 48% from 2019.
NOT racing horses has biggest impact.

The U.S Horse Racing industry is an historical relic. 2025's $11 Billion wagering handle is a blip in the 2025 U.S. Gross Domestic Product of $30.77 Trillion, down 57% adj for inflation since 2023. At least 51 tracks closed since 2000. People no longer need to risk & take horses' lives to legally gamble.
